It is my understanding that corporations used to be limited:
1. Corporate charters were only granted for specific, high-visibility public purposes that were too risky to otherwise attract businessmen and investors.
2. Corporate charters were only granted by sovereigns (e.g. Kings, Legislatures, etc.).
3. Corporate charters expired after the purpose was accomplished or after a definite period (e.g. 20 years), whichever came first.
4. Corporations were prohibited from participating in politics.
Corporations have succeeded in getting all of the above thrown out the window. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (e.g. Free Enterprise) have all suffered.
Ralph Nader is an outspoken critic of corporations. Please see his works for more/ better information.
